Something to Get All Shook Up About: Tomoka Brewing Co. Opens New Brewpub in Port Orange

The new Tomoka Brewing Company brewpub in Port Orange, FL.
There was one, now there are two. Peter and Jen of Tomoka Brewery in Ormond Beach have now opened a second, larger brewpub location in Port Orange, which is also home to a 15-bbl production facility.  The Port Orange brewpub opened on February 12 at 4pm.  So, what better way to spend Saturday Valentine's Day than to visit a new brewpub, eh?

Most of you probably know that Tomoka Brewery, the first brewery in Volusia County, opened on Granada Blvd. in Ormond Beach on July 5, 2013.  Although the brewery wasn't able to begin brewing on site until December 2013 (due to licensing stuff), it quickly became apparent that there was quite a bit of brew-creativity here. Unfortunately, every time that I visited, I wasn't able to get their own beers, just having missed the tappings, or because they sold out that quickly. Otherwise, the brewery offered some pretty good beers from other Florida breweries. As Jen has experience in the pizza biz, the brewery also offered homemade pizzas.

In 2014, Tomoka Brewery won a couple of prestigious medals at the Best Florida Beer Championships: a Gold for its Elvis Peanut Butter Banana Sandwich Brown, and a Bronze for its Pumpernickel Porter.  I still haven't had that "Elvis," but I did have the Pumpernickel Porter at two events, and it tastes true to its name.

Not too long after, they started planning a production brewery with a 15-bbl system.  If you were following on social media (I'm a beergeek, I do that kind of stuff), you saw the progress of the interior construction and the delivery of the tanks.  Long story short, yep, the new brewpub opened February 12 at 2647 S. Clyde Morris Blvd. in Port Orange (just south of Daytona Beach).

The result is this: the Ormond Beach location is now a Sour Nano-Brewpub, and the Port Orange location is a 15-bbl production brewpub with a full menu. It also recently began distribution to local establishments as well, so you'll see some Tomoka Brewing beer at other locations now, too.

The new brewpub has a full kitchen, dining area, bar with table seating, a separate dining room off the bar with additional TVs, and an outdoor patio.  The brewhouse is housed behind a glass partition along the dining room.

On the day I visited (keep in mind this was 2 days after opening), the available house beers were: Tomoka Hazy Sunrise, a weissbier; Lunar Eclipse Stout; Big Bang Double Red IPA; and Mutha Fuggle, an extra special bitter.  Oh, come on now, who doesn't like saying "Mutha Fuggle"?  I liked it so much (pun intended), I ordered more than one (yeah, of course that made it on social media and Untappd).

C'mon, say it with me now:
Mutha Fuggle
Tasty; citrusy, but not too much
The proof is in the Fuggle(s).
I only have two hands.
The Hop Quest IPA, an American IPA, wasn't on tap that night, but it's my understanding that it is available now (yeah, yeah, another reason to go back).

Lunar Eclipse Stout: Nice roasty blend;
no overpowering flavors; easy on the palate
Red IPA.  I didn't have this one, but I heard it was
very good. There's a growler of it.
You'll definitely want to check out the food menu. We're talking full menu here: appetizers, pizzas, soups, salads, burgers, entrees. The portions are not only good-sized, but there's some quality here. Hard to believe that this place was only open for two days.

Pulled pork empanadas.
Really, really good.
This pizza was awesome
Ribs with Stout BBQ sauce.
The rub seasonings may be a bit too spicy for some.
The Stout sauce is quite good - I could put that on a bunch of things.

It just so happened that Elvis made an appearance at the brewpub that night (I think he was at the Ormond Beach location before that). One of these days, I'll get that PB Banana Sandwich Brown. Sounds like something to get "all shook up" about.

The brewpub opens daily at 11am for lunch (noon on Sundays).  Join the loyalty club and get a shirt, koozie and a growler fill -- you'll want to ask about that.

I think you'll want to check this out.  As more house beers make their way onto the menu, it's another reason to go back.  I know that there are a few more menu items that I want to try, and, well, there's always more beer to sample. The staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is laid back and comfortable.

Each location has its own separate webpage and social media pages. For the original Ormond Beach nano location, see Tomoka Brewery.  For the new Port Orange brewpub, take a look at Tomoka Brewing Company

Til next time, enjoy the beer!  See you at a brewery, brewpub or beer event some time!

Cheers...

It's BeerFest Time in Florida, Chapter 3: Marchin' On!

Spring is in the air!  Beerfests are on the schedule!  Lookin' for some beer in March? Did someone say R-O-A-D-T-R-I-P? Or, if it's not a roadtrip for you, just get to one of these events, have some awesome beer, have some fun, meet friends, and make new friends (because life's too short....). Cheers!

Well, it's the big one.  It's an entire week of beer.  Tampa Bay Beer Week 2015 rolls on March 7-15.  And, nothing like a big, freakin' beerfest to start it off on Saturday, March 7, when the Florida Brewers Guild Craft Beer Fest is comin' at ya at Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park from 2-5pm (or get that extra hour and more at 1pm for VIPs). Then, there's the Best Florida Beer Championship and Brewers Ball on Sunday, March 8.  But, that's not all.... Check out the website for more event info all week.

CIGAR CITY BREWING'S HUNAHPU'S DAY®, MARCH 14, 2015: Unless you were online a few weeks ago and snared tickets during those couple of minutes before they sold out, you ain't gettin' any (unless you resort to begging, pleading and other desperate acts with someone who scored those tix).

In case you need another reason to go to South Florida, here you go.  Sprung! Spring Beer Festival celebrates craft beer at Peacock Park in Coconut Grove on March 7. Beer, games, and even "human bowling." Get "in" the ball! General admission is 4-7pm, but different ticket options get you in earlier.  Check out Sprung! on Facebook and Twitter, too.  As of yesterday, there was a 50% Groupon discount.  Check out the website and social media for some really cool photos from last year's fest. And, the beer list?...some "usual" suspects and local South Florida beer too. That SoFla beer scene just keeps hummin' along, and it's even getting difficult to keep up with the pace of things down there!  But, hey, it's SoFla!

And, in Southwest Florida, check out Naples Craft Beer Fest, happening at the Naples Bayfront on March 7, from 12-4pm. In addition to the beer, local restaurants will be offering their food, along with beer pairings. Local, regional, and national beer sampling, along with food and music-- that all adds up to one good time and an awesome afternoon.

Gastrofest Jacksonville 2015 is Jacksonville's "first food fest to celebrate local food providers, craft beers, spirits & cocktails."  The event takes place on Saturday, March 21 at Hemming Park in downtown Jax and features a homebrew contest and craft cocktail contest. Check 'em out on Facebook and Twitter for all the latest details.  Sounds like a day of gastronomical proportions.  Get your stomachs ready (and maybe some elastic waistbands).

Downtown Lakeland gets into the beerfest act on March 21, 2-6pm (general admission; VIP at 1pm) with Brewz Crewz Craft Beer Festival. About 100 beers will be offered, and proceeds benefit Downtown Lakeland Partnership and SPCA Florida.  Enjoy brews by the lake and take in some sounds of live music, too. Check out the Facebook page for more info and stuff.

Hey, are you ready to run, walk, crawl, and chug?  Jacksonville, mark your calendar for March 28, 2pm, for Tap 'N Run 4k, at 1521 Margaret St. I missed this event last year, but I have done a beer-run.  Trust me, you really need those beer breaks during the run -- hydration, you know. Registration is open now.  Don't even think about doing this unless you want to have some fun.  Crazy outfits, beer stations, crazy participants... Can you handle it?  This could be a side-splitter. Follow on Facebook and Twitter, too, for the latest.

Rounding out the month of March is a two-day music and craft beer fest on March 28 & 29 in Fernandina Beach, Slide Into Spring. This fest benefits Nassau Humane Society and 8 Flags Playscapes.  Lots of music from a wide variety of genres and lots of craft beer samples should have you feeling pretty happy. Tickets are available now.  There's a Facebook Event page that has the music line-up, too.

So, are you thirsty yet?  Whether you're looking for music, some physical activity, or just plain beer sampling, I think there's something here for everyone.  I think I'll be at a few of these.  Yeah, someone has to do this stuff.

See you at a beerfest or beer event... or a tasting room... or wherever the beer takes us!

P.S.  If there are other events that I don't have listed here, just let me know!  I keep an annual calendar of events that I know about, and I update it constantly (or at least when I'm not sampling some beer).
