REVIEW-A-BREW:

Beer: Big Deal Double IPA, 9.5 ABV
Style: Double IPA
Brewery: Darwin Brewing Co., Bradenton FL

Double IPAs (also known as "Imperial IPAs") generally consist of "more." As in more malt, more hops, and, more strength, in terms of a higher ABV, than its hop darling cousin, the IPA (India Pale Ale). Higher malt typically results in a smooth beer that exhibits greater sweetness. For those looking for a beer that's "big," a Double IPA ("DIPA") packs a punch in a smaller size pour -- the style is usually served in a snifter.

The Big Deal Double IPA is currently one of three beers from Darwin Brewing that are available at retail exclusively at Lucky's Market stores in Florida under the "Big Deal" moniker. The Darwin-Lucky's partnership (a "Big Deal") was announced in late 2016, with the first beer in the series being the Chocolate Cherry Big Deal Imperial Stout (a review of the beer from November 14, 2016 appears on this site's associated Instagram page). The other beer currently in the series is the Big Deal Lager (see beer review dated June 21). Both the Big Deal Lager and the Big Deal Double IPA are June 2017 releases.

Beer Characteristics:

The Big Deal Double IPA pours dark gold in color. It retains a fluffy head retention. Aromas of floral and fruity notes are evident, and the beer exudes the expected hoppy character.

The beer is brewed with El Dorado and Centennial hops, which evoke pear, watermelon, citrus, and pine. The flavor of the beer is somewhat complex and travels through several stages following the beginning sip. Initially, tastes of floral and pine are noted, along with a resiny characteristic. Tropical fruitiness arises during the middle, together with a noticeable malt sweetness. The beer finishes with a warming effect and a lingering bitterness on the palate.

Overall, the beer is smooth; a creamy maltiness and pronounced hoppiness complement each other. Centennial hops fans will especially enjoy the assertive flavoring.

Double IPAs just might be the best of both worlds for those who relish hoppiness as well as those who savor maltiness.

The Big Deal Double IPA will appeal to both types.

This beer was poured from a 22 oz. bomber -- perfect for sharing ..... or, not.

Thanks to Darwin Brewing for the beermail, and the chance to experience this beer!

Cheers!  čŹ╗
