Slam Dunk: Strings Sports Brewery Opens in Jax

June 26, 2019: When an experienced restaurateur and his two sons who love brewing beer all happen to love sports (especially local sports), it only seems natural that they would open a sports-themed brewery/restaurant. Hoop It Up, Jacksonville, Strings Sports Brewery has hit a three-pointer on Main Street in the Springfield area.

With a Grand Opening touted as its "Home Opener" on Monday, June 24, the Adeeb family served beer, burgers, wings and more to a lively crowd. The name is a reference to owner Scott "String" Adeeb, who also owns the Bono's Pit Bar-B-Q on San Pablo Road. Apparently, Scott had an affection for basketball as a kid, and the name stuck.

And, yes, those are serving tanks behind the bar
A former service station from the 1930's, the corner venue features garage doors, a front courtyard with cornhole, a beer garden in the rear, and two main interior sections: a bar on one side, and a full kitchen on the other. Order drinks at the bar, and then head to the counter to order "Strings Street Fare," including sandwiches, salads, wings, and kids' portions.

As you can imagine, the recurring vibe here is sports. Instead of receiving a "number" for your food order, there's a "sports card" with a team name on it. The food runners will find you by the team.

All of the seating features heavy wood tables, with a number of bar tables incorporating barrels as bases.

The main bar is a U-shaped wraparound, seating around 16, with a view of the brewhouse. A roll up partition separates inside from outside, with additional bar rail seating.

The outdoor beer garden could be an entire venue on its own: the large covered space offers tables and chairs, and a center seated pit with a large wood-block table. A historic scoreboard graces the rear wall, with a mural depicting the city on the other.

After you "walk the bases" and explore the place, sit down and enjoy a beer. As of the time of this writing, three house beers are on tap, along with six guest taps:

The "home" beers each have a sports story to tell. The "Section 215" Blonde Ale refers to Section 215 at TIAA Bank Field, where the Adeeb family's seats are located for the Jaguars games. "Red Caps" Red Ale is a throwback to the Jacksonville Red Caps team from the Negro American League. "Bullet Bob" Hazy IPA pays homage to Olympic Sprinter Bob Hayes, who also earned a Super Bowl ring. Expect more "home beers" to take their place on the roster soon.

drinks smooth, and is repeatable (photo: Linda Johnson)
Brother brewers Trevor and Colby Adeeb have produced several solid house beers for the initial run. The Blonde Ale is malty and crisp, and is likely to be a go-to beer for anyone on any given day. Red Caps Red Ale features a pronounced caramel character in a malt-forward beer, with an appropriate amount of hops that make it one that can be repeatable without being heavy. The Hazy IPA pours a golden haze, with a citrus nose and a pleasant dry finish, which will appeal to the hazy and/or IPA crowd. Tip of the cap to the first run of beers!

While sipping on beer at Strings Sports Brewery, it's entirely likely that hunger will set in, especially when all of those street fare plates are roaming by in the hands of the food runners. As shown above on the menu, there's a good variety of food here, from hand-helds to knife-and-fork platters. If comfort food is your thing, the burger is a home run: two patties (4 oz each) (with or without cheese), with a special burger sauce that complements and doesn't overpower the beef, along with familiar accompaniments of lettuce, tomato and pickles. The side of fries is not only a generous portion for a sports-sized appetite, the fries are the skin-on variety, without being salt-heavy and compromising the potato flavor.

Hungry yet?
There's still one more aspect of Strings Sports Brewery -- yes, the sports! Sports Heads can watch sports on the TVs throughout the place. In addition to cornhole, there are additional games to play, such as Connect 4, Jenga, Golden Tee, and darts. And, then there's that other thing under the scoreboard in the main bar area ... basketball free-throws! Yes, that's right. There's a free-throw shooting lane with a basket on each side for sinking regulation-sized basketballs.

Yeah, at any brewery function -- especially a new opening -- locals from other breweries tend to lend some support, such as these guys from Green Room Brewing ... here under the watchful eye of Scott ("String") himself.

This site first met the brewers from Strings Sports Brewery in November 2017 at the pre-party event for Jacksonville Porchfest, where they served up a sample beer and made introductions onto the Jax brewery scene. Seems like they started on the right track!

Look for flights of Strings beers and to-go Crowler cans in about a week or so. The bar also serves red and white wines, kombucha and cider. The kitchen side offers a self-serve soda machine for additional beverages. The brewery will also roll out a mobile brewery bar during large events to pour even more beer.

Strings Sports Brewery is located at 1850 N. Main Street, at the corner of Main and Ninth Streets. Parking is available streetside along Main Street. With its slogan of "Family. Beer. Sports.," the venue is family-friendly. Strings Sports Brewery opens at 11 am daily.

It's your ticket.

Had a great time visiting Strings Sports Brewery on its Grand Opening Day. The spot is sure to be a hit not only during fall sports season, but any time. Congrats to the Adeeb family!

Til next time,
