Slam Dunk: Strings Sports Brewery Opens in Jax

Strings Sports Brewery is open (photo: Linda Johnson)
June 26, 2019: When an experienced restaurateur and his two sons who love brewing beer all happen to love sports (especially local sports), it only seems natural that they would open a sports-themed brewery/restaurant. Hoop It Up, Jacksonville, Strings Sports Brewery has hit a three-pointer on Main Street in the Springfield area.

With a Grand Opening touted as its "Home Opener" on Monday, June 24, the Adeeb family served beer, burgers, wings and more to a lively crowd. The name is a reference to owner Scott "String" Adeeb, who also owns the Bono's Pit Bar-B-Q on San Pablo Road. Apparently, Scott had an affection for basketball as a kid, and the name stuck.

Legacy Ale Works, Jacksonville: Mixing Old and New to Create a New Legacy

Congrats to Legacy Ale Works!
Exterior and tap room entry (photo: Linda Johnson)
February 13, 2019: It's been a day that Matt and Liz Jacobs have dreamed about for quite some time. The husband-and-wife team are co-owners of Legacy Ale Works, the newest craft brewery to open in Jacksonville, Florida. After appearing at beer samplings and beerfests since summer of 2017 and a lengthy search for a place to call home, the brewery and tap room opens to the public with a Grand Opening on Saturday, February 16, 2019, at 4pm.

Legacy Ale Works first came onto the Jacksonville beer scene with a beer sampling in July 2017 at local craft shop Beer:30 San Marco after having first appeared earlier at Hogtown Craft Beer Fest in Gainesville. The couple intended to open a family-friendly brewery with a range of beer styles. After an initial property selection in the Mandarin area didn't materialize, they continued their search. On March 1, they announced their plans to build the neighborhood brewery in the Bartram Park area. Following zoning and permitting approvals which ran through Fall of 2018, construction began, and the countdown to Opening Day was on.

Now Open: Fishweir Brewing, Jacksonville

Fishweir Brewing is now open for business.

November 29, 2018: It's official: Fishweir Brewing Company, in the Murray Hill section of Jacksonville, is now the area's "newest brewery." With a soft opening on Wednesday, November 28, the brewery's Grand Opening Day takes place on Thursday, November 29, beginning at 3pm.

Owners Broc and Stacey Flores have transformed the former Kit Kat Lounge nightclub on Edgewood Avenue South into a neighborhood tap room and brewery. From the cozy outdoor front porch to the wood-themed interior, guests can look forward to a welcoming atmosphere and a variety of beer styles.

Yulee Gets a Brewery: Hello, SJ Brewing!

Welcome! The first brewery in Yulee, Florida: SJ Brewing Co.
(photo: Linda Johnson)
August 13, 2018: With the influx of new breweries dotting the landscape across the country, it's no surprise that several new area breweries are coming on board in various locations around the North Florida/Jacksonville metro area during the last few months of 2018. One of them opened its tap room on Saturday, August 4 (this site visited the new digs on opening day). Say Hello to SJ Brewing Company, the first brewery to open in Yulee -- for those of you who don't know, that's in Nassau County, just north of Jacksonville.

Although the tap room is currently serving guest beers from local and regional breweries on its twelve taps, look for house beers to start flowing soon. The bar also offers wines and sodas. The venue offers indoor and outdoor seating. Inside, the tap room features a bar on one side, plenty of space to move around, and ample seating at individual tables and chairs. Guests can watch two TVs or play an assortment of table and board games. The brewhouse sits in the back, on the other side of a half wall. Outside is a deck with umbrellas for enjoying beer in the sunshine and breezes.

Artwork on the tap room wall features the labels of the new brewery’s upcoming five core beers: Yulee Pale Ale, Bunny Brown Ale, I Gose With You, Stop Jonesing IPA, and Battle Plan Imperial Stout.

Ruby Beach Brewing Coasts Into Jax Beach

Ruby Beach Brewing opens in Jax Beach
over Memorial Day Weekend
 (photo: Linda Johnson)
May 30, 2018: Ruby Beach Brewing quietly opened over the Memorial Day weekend. The most recent addition to the Jacksonville area's craft beer scene announced its opening on Saturday, May 26 through its Facebook page.

Set in the former Zeta location, Ruby Beach Brewing underwent a re-branding and a physical renovation during the first half of 2018. Word of the closing of Zeta and re-branding to the new concept surfaced in a January 8 press release by Owner Mark Vandeloo, in which he expressed a renewed focus on craft beer.

All's Fair at Hogtown Craft Beer Fest 2018, Gainesville

April 26, 2018:  It had: over 100 breweries, six homebrew clubs, 47 special tappings, nine pods, food trucks, music under the pavilion, plenty of on-site parking ... even rain and sunshine. The 7th Annual Hogtown Craft Beer Fest presented by the Hogtown Brewers on April 21 pretty much had it all at the Alachua County Fairgrounds, a new fest venue this year.

This was my sixth trek to Hogtown, and the beertrip once again included more than a beerfest -- it's a Gainesville weekend!

"Ones" to Watch: Atlantic Beach Brewing and Hyperion Brewing, Jax, One-Year Anniversaries in May

April 11, 2018: It's been just about a year, and two Jacksonville-area breweries have gone from planning to opening to operating and getting over that first-year hurdle. As they celebrate their one-year anniversaries in May and head into Year Two, catch up with the "former" newbies, Atlantic Beach Brewing Company ("ABBC") and Hyperion Brewing Company ("HBC") on what that first year's been like for each of them.

That distinctive shark loomed over the bar when Atlantic Beach Brewing Company hit the shores of Jax on opening day 2017. With the motto of "Aggressively Pursuing Craft," co-owners Spencer Horn, Linda Horn and Chuck Horn and Brewmaster Rory Malloy have expanded the draft list, released several specialty bottles, and began canning and distributing three core beers ahead of schedule.

Over in the Springfield neighborhood of Jax, Hyperion Brewing introduced the community to its "Bold, Rebellious Beer" concept, with constantly-rotating taps. Through the course of the year, owner Alex McKeown and the brewery staff have engaged the local community in a number of hosted events, along with tapping over 200 new beer recipes. Listening to its customers, Hyperion will bring several of the most popular beers on board on a regular basis in Year Two.

So, how's brewery life been treating you? Let's find out what they had to say.

PROOF BREWING, TALLAHASSEE, ANNOUNCES RELOCATION AND EXPANSION PLANS

March 19, 2018:  Tallahassee brewery Proof Brewing Co. today announced its plans to expand its operations and relocate to a larger facility in downtown Tallahassee, which will allow for a 30,000 barrel production capability -- with room for additional expansion.

According to a statement released today, Proof Brewing will begin renovations this month at the 34,000sf former Coca-Cola Bottling Company building at 1320 South Monroe St. When all said and done, the new brewery will include an expanded tasting room, retail store, private event space, kitchen and beer garden.  On the brewhouse side of things, the move means efficiency upgrades, a quality control lab and additional fermentation capacity, increasing the possible production to 30,000 barrels.

Hunahpu's Day 2018 Scores with Change of Venue and Layout

March 14, 2018:
With Raymond James Stadium looming in the background, Cigar City Brewing hosted its 9th annual Hunahpu's Day® beerfest celebrating the release of its Hunahpu's® Imperial Stout in Tampa on Saturday, March 10, 2018.

The change in venue this year at Parking Lots 5 and 7 on the stadium grounds also set itself up for an entirely new layout, providing six oversized beer tents, a food truck area with around 15 food trucks, large tented shaded areas with picnic tables, water bottle stations, a brewers' area, and a Jameson whiskey-tasting tent. The day might have been a bit cooler and cloudier than expected, but it didn't seem to make a difference to the few thousand beer geeks there to sample beers from around 175 breweries.

Once again this year, admission to the sold-out fest was by pre-purchased wristband, which included allotments of Hunahpu's Imperial Stout in quantities of either 4, 8 or 12 bottles, available for pickup at Cigar City Brewing's brewery and tap room a short distance away on Spruce Street.

Even before the fest started on Saturday, locals and visitors alike were in town for Tampa Bay Beer Week (see recaps on this site from FBG Fest and Best Florida Beer held the weekend before). A stop at Cigar City Brewing on Friday night revealed the new logo on the signage:

West Palm Beach Brewery & Wine Vault: A Winning Recipe

February 18, 2018:  No matter how you mix, blend, brew, slice, dice, or pour it, based on a recent visit, West Palm Beach Brewery and Wine Vault has created a winning recipe!

The brewery, one of Palm Beach County's newest, opened in mid-December 2017. A Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Celebration takes place on February 19 at 5:30pm.

Situated in downtown West Palm Beach on Evernia Street, the venue is the creation of West Palm Beach attorney John Pankauski. With a passion for wine, along with ownership of a Napa Valley vineyard, and a private label wine collection, Pankauski turned his attention to craft beer and set out to design a place where craft beer and fine wines could harmonize under one roof. With those elements in mind, he brought in Head Brewer Joel Kodner and Chef Andrew Castardi to lead the brewing and kitchen operations, respectively. Add in experienced General Manager Bruce Edel to the mix, and the new craft brewery has the ingredients for a unique neighborhood establishment.

No Bones About It: Mathews Brewing Co., Lake Worth

February 8, 2018:   It might not be too often that you walk into a brewery that's only been open just over a month and expect things to be running like it's been around a while. No bones about it: Mathews Brewing Company, Lake Worth, is already up and running like a big dog.

Maybe it's the engineering and homebrewing background of Owner Dave Mathews (not the band and concert guy, but we'll get to that). Maybe it's the commercial brewing experience of Head Brewer James Retzler. The ingredients all add up to a recipe that's pretty doggone good from the tap room to the outdoor patio... to the beer.

First, you have to get there. If you're not familiar with Lake Worth, a quick search on your favorite online map shows the location about a half mile west of I-95 near US 1. The brewery is situated in an older mixed industrial/commercial/residential area that might not look like a home for a sparkling new brewery. The building itself, which formerly housed the Lake Worth Herald, stands out, with its crisp white exterior and gray trim. Just look for the dog-and-crossbones.

Bottlenose Brewing, Jax, Makes a Splash with First House Beer Tappings

February 5, 2018:
From the looks of the packed house at Bottlenose Brewing on Saturday afternoon, February 3, it was safe to say that local Jax area craft beer lovers had the highly anticipated release of the brewery's first round of house beers on their radar.

"It's been a party since 11am," said Head Brewer Chas Nemecek, who found a few minutes to spare from working behind the bar to help serve the crowd. Owner Mark Stillman constantly moved around between the kitchen, bar and indoor and outdoor dining areas interacting with the guests and handing out logoed koozies and stickers.

Heck Yeah, Haze and Barrels: Southern Swells Brewing, Jax Beach, Turns One, January 27

January 24, 2018:  Southern Swells Brewing in Jacksonville Beach rolls into its First Anniversary on Saturday, January 27 at noon, with six new beers in can and bottle releases brewed especially for the occasion. While they brew a variety of different beer styles, co-founders Corey Adams and Jay Varney have stormed onto the Jax craft beer landscape with their hazy New England-style beers and unusual beer names.

Word of the new brewery surfaced via social media in April 2016, taking the local area by surprise. The following January, the brewery opened with guest taps while the house beers were still in the works. Almost a year to the day of the initial brewery announcement, eight house beers made their way onto the taps. "We were just hoping to put out a few good beers to start," said Corey in an interview. "It's been incredible that it's been a year."

Due South Brewing Trench Day 2018: A Voyage Through Renovations and Dark Brews

Mariana Trench® Imperial Stout 2018
January 23, 2018: In the Western Pacific Ocean lies the deepest part of the world's oceans, the "Mariana Trench," reaching a depth of over 36,000 feet. Inspired by that depth and darkness, Due South Brewing Co. brews its Mariana Trench® Imperial Stout only once each year. And, what better way to celebrate the award-winning beer than by hosting an annual "Trench Day!"

On Saturday, January 20, Due South Brewing released its 2018 version of the beer at its fourth annual Trench Day beerfest. Held onsite at the brewery, the beerfest is an "intimate" gathering of around 300. Not only does this beerfest take place indoors so that weather is not an issue, the limited number of tickets provides attendees with an enjoyable experience with plenty of options for seating, standing or moving around -- and, without long beer lines!

MAIN & SIX BREWING OPENS IN JACKSONVILLE, NOVEMBER 3-4, 2017

Main & Six Brewing opened its doors with a soft opening on Friday night, November 3. Those in attendance were able to taste six house beers on tap. The soft opening not only let guests get an early taste of the new beers, but it also gave the crew a chance to prepare for the next day's Grand Opening!

A steady stream of well-wishers and craft beer lovers visited Main & Six on Saturday afternoon, November 4, at the Grand Opening, which coincided with the Jacksonville PorchFest neighborhood music fest a few blocks away.

Take a look at the Main & Six preview story on brewnymph.com, and make a visit to Jacksonville's newest brewery!

Main & Six Brewing, Jax: Neighborhood-Inspired Brewery Brews Up November 4 Opening Date

November 1, 2017:
When Dennis Espinosa opens the doors to Main & Six Brewing Company on Saturday, November 4, it will already be an anniversary in the new brewery's life. It was a year ago to the day that he and brewery co-owner Cindy Lasky (who also happens to be his mom) closed on the purchase of the building at 1636 North Main Street in the Springfield neighborhood of Jacksonville, just north of the city's downtown.
[Ed. Note, 11/5: Check out some "after" photos and comments about the beer and the crowd from the Soft Opening on Friday night, 11/3, and the Grand Opening, 11/4 on the Photos page! Photos and info you saw here first!]

Dog Rose Brewing, St. Augustine: It's Opened Up!

Dog Rose Brewing, seen at sunset
October 29, 2017:
Dog Rose Brewing quietly opened just off of downtown St. Augustine Friday night. After months of working on construction, permitting, and licensing matters, owner Doug Murr brewed the first batches of beer. Opening weekend features six house beers on tap, with more on the way.

The area's newest brewery offers a spacious, open tap room and might be described as casual-upscale. The former art gallery property has been transformed into a comfortable, intimate, yet friendly and interactive local bar, with beers that will appeal to any type of palate.

The place: Brewer's Pizza/Pinglehead Brewing, Orange Park/Jax

Congratulations to Pinglehead Brewing and Brewer's Pizza, as they marked seven years of pizza and "Beer With Attitude" at the annual PHobia PHest celebration of beer, pizza and Halloween.

Yes, that infamous Pinglehead Clown was watching over the crowd all afternoon.

The brewery released four new barrel-aged beers in the new Crowlers: Rum Barrel-Aged Banana Pancakes Breakfast Ale, Port Barrel Barleywine, Bourbon Barrel Mind Drive Imperial Porter, and Double Oaked Bourbon Barrel Mind Drive Imperial Porter.

It was a devilishly, haunting good time at Brewer's Pizza! Cheers to another year!

For background about Pinglehead Brewing, check out the 2016 anniversary story. And, see the October 28 edition of the "Let's Get a Beer, Florida" video (on the brewnymph.com homepage), which was recorded here, too!

Rocky Water Brew Fest, Melbourne: A Rockin' Time

October 16, 2017:
It was one rockin' time at the 4th Annual Rocky Water Brew Fest, presented by Eau Gallie Rotary, on Saturday, October 14 at Eau Gallie Square in Melbourne. The rain from Friday night and Saturday morning moved out, and it was smooth sailin' at the all-Florida beerfest in the Harbor City.

The fest highlights the smaller breweries in the state, with many brewers and owners on board to talk beer with the craft beer crowd. Tickets sold out around 2pm on fest day, shortly after the gates opened. Thirty-five breweries, including the local SAAZ homebrew club and a nearby brewery-in-planning (see below), lined both sides of the streets under tents at the corner of Highland Avenue and West Eau Gallie Boulevard. Among the breweries were four 2017 GABF medalists: Big Top Brewing, SixTen Brewing, LauderAle, and Walking Tree Brewery. I attended this fest the first two years, and after last year's sideline (courtesy of Matthew), I was excited to be back. What a way to spend an afternoon! A word of caution: lots of photos ahead!
