It's Summer: Time to Hit the .... Beachside Brew Pub, Ormond Beach

Ah, yes, Summertime. And, not only that, Summertime in Florida! Ocean breezes, sand between your toes, endless horizon, beach umbrellas ... and, of course, some cold beer to go with your beach day. Along scenic Highway A1A in Ormond-by-the-Sea, you'll find Beachside Brew Pub, a small brewery with some big-tasting beers. But, don't just wait for a beach day to head over to this place, because anytime is a good time to make a visit here. I enjoyed my first stop so much that recently, I made a second trip, finding new brews on tap.

Walking Tree Brewery, Vero Beach, Celebrates Runaway First Year

When a brewery picks up three medals at Best Florida Beer Championship, has one of those named Best Beer in Florida, and is then awarded the title of Best Small Brewery in the state, that's a reason to celebrate. But, to have all that happen in your first year as an operating brewery? Yeah, that probably calls for a large-scale anniversary bash. Walking Tree Brewery did just that as it threw one huge party in Vero Beach last Saturday, July 15 to mark its first anniversary.

A Rose by the Name of Dog Rose Brewing to Open in St. Augustine

Dog Rose Brewing, St. Augustine
"Handcrafted." That's the word Doug Murr uses to describe his new brewery, Dog Rose Brewing Co., as it moves toward opening later this summer in the historic Lincolnville area of downtown St. Augustine. While still undergoing construction, the brewery is all about attention to details and giving brewery guests the experience and beers that they want. The beer, the bar, the tables - all handcrafted - says Doug.

Florida Theatre, Jacksonville, Presents Tasty Blues, Brews & BBQ, August 24

It promises to be a winning recipe that'll satisfy your senses, and you'll be singing the brews all night long.  On Thursday, August 24, the Florida Theatre hosts its annual Blues, Brews & BBQ night which combines music, craft beer and barbecue dishes on both levels of the historic theatre. The fundraising event, once again presented by Publix Supermarket Charities, supports the historic theatre's mission of bringing celebrated arts and entertainment experiences to the community while preserving a historic landmark. The downtown Jacksonville venue has been a leading entertainment center since 1927, and it has hosted a number of different musical genres and entertainers over the years, to the tune of over 200 entertainment events annually. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Don't Sweat It! Palm Beach Summer Beer Fest is Here

South Florida has a reputation as a hot spot -- in more ways than one. It's July -- not only
is that summer sun hot, there can be enough humidity to make for a challenging hair day, and some of those storms seem to come out of nowhere. With Summer in full gear, escapes to the beaches and breezes cool it off during the day, while the nightlife sizzles. Sounds like a perfect time for a beerfest! And, it is. The Palm Beach Summer Beer Fest is back for its fifth year on July 22 indoors at the South Florida Fairgrounds Expo Center. No matter what Mother Nature doles out, there's no need to sweat it, because this is one hot fest that stays cool and dry. Check out the preview story from last year, which was my fourth year attending this fest.

Engine 15 Brewing Seventh Anniversary: Annual Chupacabra Three Ways

Last week, Engine 15 Brewing Co. hosted a Vertical Tasting of its annual Imperial Chupacabra Barrel-Aged Russian Imperial Stout, an event which leads into its Seventh Anniversary party and bottle release on Saturday, July 1 at its Jacksonville Beach brewpub. Masters of Ceremonies and Brewery Co-owners Luch Scremin and Sean Bielman imparted some humorous anecdotes much to the delight of the event attendees (picture bourbon barrels so fresh that they contained "charcoal black liquid" in 2014). The pre-anniversary event featured tastings of Chupacabra from 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, along with this year's 2017 versions (yes, that last one is plural).

Hurricane Inspires Wicked Barley Brewing's First Bottle Release

Last fall, someone named Matthew decided to make a stop in the Jacksonville area and caused some havoc. Different people have different ways of dealing with such an occurrence. The brewers at Wicked Barley Brewing had one advantage over most of the population dealing with the storm: they hunkered down in their brewpub. Their experiences during that time inspired the brewery's first barrel-aged beer, which also happens to be its first bottle release. Wicked Barley will release its "Isolated Incident" Bourbon-Barrel Aged Imperial Stout with a party and cookout on Saturday, June 24, starting at 11am.

New Smyrna Beach Brewing: Something New is Brewing

Original brewery & tap room on Sams Avenue
[Ed. Note: 7/17/2017: I made a return visit to New Smyrna Beach Brewing on July 16 for the first time since the new location opened. New beers on tap, and the place is awesome. Check out the "after" photos here ]

When the last beer is served, and the doors close Friday night (June 16) at New Smyrna Beach Brewing Co. on Sams Avenue in downtown New Smyrna Beach, it will be a historic chapter in the young life of the popular neighborhood brewery. When Owner and Brewmaster Chris Coyle opens the doors on Saturday, June 17, it's sure to be an exciting, yet bittersweet, moment, as the brewery switches operations over to its new location just around the corner at 143 Canal Street.

Preparations for the move have been in the works for months. Chris has been one busy guy: moving equipment, building the new tap room and brewery, keeping the existing brewery running, and, of course, brewing beer! This writer first visited the brewery in 2014, a few months after it opened, then made a return visit, and it has turned out to be a fairly usual stop on the way back from events in South Florida. There's a pretty good combination here that keeps people coming back: good beer, good people! Plus, I like getting that cool blue growler (or two) filled and chatting with manager Jeff.

Chris took some time out of his hectic schedule to show me around the new place this past week, and it's quite a bit different in a number of ways. First, there's the size: the original space measures around 900 sf total, with a bar, the 3.5-barrel brewhouse, and one bathroom. When those doors open Saturday at the new digs, customers will have plenty of space to move around in the 3000-sf place, about half of which is tap room space.

Green Room Brewing Barrels Into Sixth Anniversary

With its laid-back beach and surfing vibe and named after one of surfing's most sought-after wave actions, Green Room Brewing in Jacksonville Beach is heading into its Sixth Anniversary on Saturday, June 17 with a quiet intensity. Much like being in the barrel of a wave for surfers, the brewery on Third Street will be the place to be when it releases its annual Secret Spot Imperial Stout aged in Dominican rum barrels for the special occasion. Festivities will begin at noon on Saturday, with limited bottles of the annual anniversary beer available for purchase.

Cocoa Beach Uncorked Launches Food and Beverage Festival on the Beach

Catching some sunshine, along with colorful food and a craft beer ...
on the beach at Cocoa Beach Uncorked
Setup for the inaugural Cocoa Beach Uncorked food and beverage fest began under dark skies last Saturday morning. By noon, and almost as if by cue, Mother Nature turned the gray skies into blue, and the rain clouds gave way to sunshine, just as the Grand Tasting Village on the beach prepared to open.

Held June 3-4 at Alan Shepard Park, the fest featured a 20,000-square-foot tent packed with chef-prepared gastronomic delights and liquid libations against a beautiful background courtesy of the Atlantic Ocean. Pre-fest info sounded pretty sweet -- picture it: culinary dishes along with an assortment of beverages on the beach -- what's not to like? And, yes, it was also apparent that the weekend would require some exercise.

June 5, 2017:

From the nothing-should-surprise-us-anymore world of craft beer and "big beer" relationships comes news that beer information and rating site Rate Beer sold a minority stake in its business to ZX Ventures, part of the AB InBev global conglomerate. Rate Beer Executive Director Joe Tucker made that announcement on Friday, June 2. "The focus of the agreement was on maintaining RateBeer’s value as an unbiased beer authority, retaining our operational independence, informing a whole new group of global consumers and keeping them excited about the beer," said the news release.

All About Local at Town Beer Co., New Jacksonville Craft Beer Bar and Shop

New Jacksonville craft beer bar and shop Town Beer Co. is taking the phrase "drink local" to heart and to a new level. When the new spot opens for business in the Murray Hill area on Saturday, May 27, the taps will pour only beers brewed in Jacksonville, and the retail shelves will offer packaged beers exclusively from Florida breweries.

Hyperion Brewing Taps Into History as Jacksonville's First Nano-Brewery Opens

Named after one of the mythological Titan siblings who was the father of Helios (Sun), Selene (Moon) and Eos (Dawn), Jacksonville's newest brewery Hyperion Brewing Company draws upon Greek mythology and local history as it looks ahead to a bright future. The brewery holds its Grand Opening on Friday, May 19, beginning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4:30pm, followed by the 5pm official opening of the doors at 1740 N. Main Street in the Springfield neighborhood. The first 50 guests will receive a souvenir glass and a ticket for a free pour on the next visit. Eddis & Sons food truck will be on site with cheesesteak sandwiches. The Grand Opening weekend coincides with the Historic Springfield Tour of Homes on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Happy American Craft Beer Week 2017!

Each year during the third week in May, craft brewers across the country -- and those who support and love craft beer -- celebrate American Craft Beer Week, a product of the Brewers Association. Now in its twelfth year, the 2017 ACBW runs May 15-21. Brewers celebrate the passion and creativity of craft beer by offering special tappings and new releases, collaborations, food and beer pairings, and whatever else they can think of!

Atlantic Beach Brewing Company Reaches Jacksonville Area Shores

Quietly, Atlantic Beach Brewing Company has made its way onto the Jacksonville craft beer landscape. The area's newest brewery opened the doors at 725 N. Atlantic Blvd in Atlantic Beach earlier this week, followed by last night's preview nite, which gave friends and family a chance to see (and taste) the finished product. Soft opening continues today (Friday, May 5) at noon, with a ribbon cutting and Grand Opening celebration slated for noon on Saturday, May 6, with music, brewery tours, growler giveaways and more. It's official ... ABBC has reached the shores of the Jacksonville area!

About six weeks ago, this writer met co-owners Spencer and Linda Horn and Brewmaster Rory Malloy at the still-under-construction venue (see preview story with in-depth interview and photos). The brewhouse was already brewing up the house beers, power tools were humming in the two tap rooms (that's not a typo), and the rest of the pieces were still falling in place.

Hopping Into Science: Wicked Barley Brewing Brings All-Florida Hops Beer to Jax

On Wednesday, May 3, at 4pm, Wicked Barley Brewing Company taps its "Throat Ripper Pale Ale." Ok, you might ask, don't breweries tap new beers and pilot batches frequently? What makes this beer unique and worthy of a headline, though, is that it is tapping into scientific and historical significance in the craft beer industry, and particularly in the State of Florida. It will be the first time a beer brewed with 100% Florida-grown hops flows in the Jacksonville area.

Beers in a Pod: 6th Annual Hogtown Craft Beer Fest

What had 113 breweries, 5 homebrew clubs/shops, around 368 beers, ciders and meads, and 10 pods all in one place? Answer: the Sixth Annual Hogtown Craft Brewers Festival, presented by the Hogtown Brewers in Gainesville, Florida on Saturday, April 22!

Craft beer enthusiasts descended upon Gainesville's Tioga Town Center for the 1pm start of the annual beerfest that features breweries from all across Florida, in addition to regional, national and international breweries. Weather was perfect for beer sampling, with a mix of sun and clouds. What more could you ask for?

Bottlenose Brewing Dives Into Jax Craft Beer Scene

Bottlenose Brewing is set to dive into the Jacksonville craft beer scene when it opens on Wedenesday, April 26, at 11am.

Although its own house beers are still a few months away from taking the dip in the brew kettle, for now, the craft beer crowd will find a one-of-a-kind selection of craft brews waiting to be poured from a wall of 50 taps, featuring all-Florida guest beers. The tap list includes a range of styles, from lighter lagers and ales to pale ales and IPAs to porters and stouts, Belgian styles, Imperial Stouts, and everything in between.

Growing Bigger and Smaller: Bold City Brewery Opens in Downtown Jax April 21

Jacksonville's Bold City Brewery is getting bigger by going smaller. On Friday, April 21 at 11am, the city's first craft production brewery opens its second location: a new brewery and tap room in the heart of Downtown Jacksonville, at 109 E. Bay St.

In late 2015, the brewery officially announced plans to build the second location, but according to co-founder Brian Miller, Bold City Brewery had been looking at the downtown area since the Spring of that year. When the space next to the now under-construction Cowford Chop House became available, the brewery found its new spot.
