Hurricane Inspires Wicked Barley Brewing's First Bottle Release

Last fall, someone named Matthew decided to make a stop in the Jacksonville area and caused some havoc. Different people have different ways of dealing with such an occurrence. The brewers at Wicked Barley Brewing had one advantage over most of the population dealing with the storm: they hunkered down in their brewpub. Their experiences during that time inspired the brewery's first barrel-aged beer, which also happens to be its first bottle release. Wicked Barley will release its "Isolated Incident" Bourbon-Barrel Aged Imperial Stout with a party and cookout on Saturday, June 24, starting at 11am.

label provided by Wicked Barley Brewing Co.

The label on the bottle tells part of the story. According to Fred Thibodeaux, Wicked Barley Production Manager, the brewing crew decided to ride out Hurricane Matthew at the brewery after evacuating their houses, because "it was the only fun place with safe drinking water, unlimited beer, and an emergency smoker grill." Although there is no visual evidence, and some imagination may be required, apparently, after consuming random bottles of Imperial Stout and bourbon during this time, the proverbial light came on, and the crew formed a "collective opinion of what and how this 'isolated incident' should taste." In view of Fred's extensive background in brewing dark and barrel-aged beers previously at Duck Rabbit Craft Brewery and Cigar City Brewing, the brewery turned to his knowledge and passion for brewing high-gravity imperial stouts to produce this beer.

The "Isolated Incident" stout (10% ABV)  is a blend of the brewery's base imperial stout aged in Four Roses Kentucky Bourbon Barrels for six months together with a more recent imperial stout, which creates a balanced flavor profile, says Fred.  The result is a beer featuring "notes of smooth chocolate, dark caramel, toffee, roast, and a light malt backbone," while the charred oak barrel "imparts notes of mild coconut, vanilla, and a slight hint of smoke," he adds.  The bourbon "adds a slight hint of bourbon heat with accents of light caramel, vanilla, and dried raisins."

Look for more barrel-aged beers -- including Doppelbock, Barleywine and Wee Heavy Scotch Ale -- to make their way into the Wicked Barley tap room later this year. "Barrel aging beers adds a new dynamic to brewing and offers a fun and interesting way to add depth and complexity."  Fred adds that the brewery will also offer non-barrel aged versions of its high-gravity beers, as the brewers "continue to improve the recipes and re-brew test versions throughout the year."

Wicked Barley's first bottle release party kicks off at 11am on June 24. Bottles (22 oz. bombers) of the "Isolated Incident" Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout will be available for purchase for $15 each, with no bottle limit (cash only). The party features a cookout in the beer garden, with live music by Who Rescued Who from 1-5pm.

Wicked Barley Brewing Co. is located at 4100 Baymeadows Rd., Jacksonville, along Goodby's Creek. The venue includes an on-site brewery, dining room, tap room/bar, covered outdoor deck, outdoor beer garden, and 100-foot boat dock. The brewery opened in July 2016, and a one-year anniversary party takes place on July 29, 2017. The brewery earned the "Best Brewpub" Award, along with additional product medals, at this year's Best Florida Beer Championships.

Here's to the "Isolated Incident."

We can only imagine what that hurricane party must have looked like last fall! (All I had was a cooler and some cold pizza.) Thanks to Fred for the inside info! Additional articles about Wicked Barley from construction to opening and additional events appear here on www.brewnymph.com

Cheers!

Til next time,

Linda

New Smyrna Beach Brewing: Something New is Brewing

Original brewery & tap room on Sams Avenue
When the last beer is served, and the doors close Friday night (June 16) at New Smyrna Beach Brewing Co. on Sams Avenue in downtown New Smyrna Beach, it will be a historic chapter in the young life of the popular neighborhood brewery. When Owner and Brewmaster Chris Coyle opens the doors on Saturday, June 17, it's sure to be an exciting, yet bittersweet, moment, as the brewery switches operations over to its new location just around the corner at 143 Canal Street.

Preparations for the move have been in the works for months. Chris has been one busy guy: moving equipment, building the new tap room and brewery, keeping the existing brewery running, and, of course, brewing beer! This writer first visited the brewery in 2014, a few months after it opened, then made a return visit, and it has turned out to be a fairly usual stop on the way back from events in South Florida. There's a pretty good combination here that keeps people coming back: good beer, good people! Plus, I like getting that cool blue growler (or two) filled and chatting with manager Jeff.

Chris took some time out of his hectic schedule to show me around the new place this past week, and it's quite a bit different in a number of ways. First, there's the size: the original space measures around 900 sf total, with a bar, the 3.5-barrel brewhouse, and one bathroom. When those doors open Saturday at the new digs, customers will have plenty of space to move around in the 3000-sf place, about half of which is tap room space.

Green Room Brewing Barrels Into Sixth Anniversary

With its laid-back beach and surfing vibe and named after one of surfing's most sought-after wave actions, Green Room Brewing in Jacksonville Beach is heading into its Sixth Anniversary on Saturday, June 17 with a quiet intensity. Much like being in the barrel of a wave for surfers, the brewery on Third Street will be the place to be when it releases its annual Secret Spot Imperial Stout aged in Dominican rum barrels for the special occasion. Festivities will begin at noon on Saturday, with limited bottles of the annual anniversary beer available for purchase.

Cocoa Beach Uncorked Launches Food and Beverage Festival on the Beach

Catching some sunshine, along with colorful food and a craft beer ...
on the beach at Cocoa Beach Uncorked
Setup for the inaugural Cocoa Beach Uncorked food and beverage fest began under dark skies last Saturday morning. By noon, and almost as if by cue, Mother Nature turned the gray skies into blue, and the rain clouds gave way to sunshine, just as the Grand Tasting Village on the beach prepared to open.

Held June 3-4 at Alan Shepard Park, the fest featured a 20,000-square-foot tent packed with chef-prepared gastronomic delights and liquid libations against a beautiful background courtesy of the Atlantic Ocean. Pre-fest info sounded pretty sweet -- picture it: culinary dishes along with an assortment of beverages on the beach -- what's not to like? And, yes, it was also apparent that the weekend would require some exercise.

Happy American Craft Beer Week 2017!

Now in its twelfth year, the 2017 ACBW runs May 15-21. Atlantic Beach Brewing Company Reaches Jacksonville Area Shores

Quietly, Atlantic Beach Brewing Company has made its way onto the Jacksonville craft beer landscape. The area's newest brewery opened the doors at 725 N. Atlantic Blvd in Atlantic Beach earlier this week, followed by last night's preview nite, which gave friends and family a chance to see (and taste) the finished product. Soft opening continues today (Friday, May 5) at noon, with a ribbon cutting and Grand Opening celebration slated for noon on Saturday, May 6, with music, brewery tours, growler giveaways and more. It's official ... ABBC has reached the shores of the Jacksonville area!

About six weeks ago, this writer met co-owners Spencer and Linda Horn and Brewmaster Rory Malloy at the still-under-construction venue (see preview story with in-depth interview and photos). The brewhouse was already brewing up the house beers, power tools were humming in the two tap rooms (that's not a typo), and the rest of the pieces were still falling in place.

Hopping Into Science: Wicked Barley Brewing Brings All-Florida Hops Beer to Jax

On Wednesday, May 3, at 4pm, Wicked Barley Brewing Company taps its "Throat Ripper Pale Ale." Ok, you might ask, don't breweries tap new beers and pilot batches frequently? What makes this beer unique and worthy of a headline, though, is that it is tapping into scientific and historical significance in the craft beer industry, and particularly in the State of Florida. It will be the first time a beer brewed with 100% Florida-grown hops flows in the Jacksonville area.

Growing Bigger and Smaller: Bold City Brewery Opens in Downtown Jax April 21

Jacksonville's Bold City Brewery is getting bigger by going smaller. On Friday, April 21 at 11am, the city's first craft production brewery opens its second location: a new brewery and tap room in the heart of Downtown Jacksonville, at 109 E. Bay St.

In late 2015, the brewery officially announced plans to build the second location, but according to co-founder Brian Miller, Bold City Brewery had been looking at the downtown area since the Spring of that year. When the space next to the now under-construction Cowford Chop House became available, the brewery found its new spot.

High Tailin': Jax Jumbo Shrimp Swing for the Fences on Opening Day!

[UPDATE, April 16: According to a press release dated April 16, attendance of 41,276 during the opening Jumbo Shrimp homestand April 12-16 was the highest attended series in the history of the Baseball Grounds! The figure represents an increase of 57% over last season's opening series. Congrats, Jumbo Shrimp!]

When the (former) Jacksonville Suns Minor League Baseball team changed its name, logo and branding to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp last November, you gotta admit that one of the first things you probably said to yourself (amid a chuckle or two) was "What?" Over the past five months following that news, the Jumbo Shrimp front office took to the media in the hopes of getting the city pumped up to cheer on the newly-proclaimed "Crustacean Nation." The new name and colorful shrimp character of the AA-Affiliate of the Major League Baseball Miami Marlins (whose Class A Advanced Affiliate is the Jupiter Hammerheads, by the way) seemed to be catching on. As April 12 Opening Day approached, the team touted its revamped food menu and upcoming season-long promotional events, held a contest to name the new Shrimp mascot, and even hosted a "Shrimp & Suds" Craft Beer Fest at the ballpark on April 1 (no April Fools there).

It looks like the team netted some pretty awesome results, too, because a record Opening Day crowd of 10,477 was on hand at the Baseball Grounds for last night's Home Opener against the Chattanooga Lookouts. The fans were treated to a 7-1 Jumbo Shrimp victory and a fireworks display following the game.

First of Its Kind Collaboration: Florida-Grown Hops to Your Glass from First Magnitude Brewing and Florida Hops Consortium

[Ed. Note and Update, 4/23/2017:  I am thrilled to drink the historic Apopka Hop Pale Ale, the focus of this story. Made with six hops, the beer is floral, with citrus and earthy notes. It's a smooth-drinking tasty brew. According to First Magnitude, the in-house release on April 6, featuring the beer in bottles and on draft, sold out within a couple of hours.] ....

Whether or not you realize it when you drink that beer, beer and science just go together. On April 6, First Magnitude Brewing Company (Gainesville) will release a limited batch of a true original pale ale. The beer is not only a product of First Magnitude's skilled brewers led by John Denny, but it's also a testament to advances in scientific research. When the brewery releases its "Apopka Hop Pale Ale," the public will get a taste of the first beer brewed exclusively with 100% Florida-grown hops.

Label representation from Florida Hops Consortium
and First Magnitude Brewing Company
While a beer brewed with six hops isn't unusual, when those six hops were all grown and harvested solely in Florida, it's unique, considering that Florida's hot climate isn't typically thought of as conducive to hops.
