January 5, 2019: Jacksonville's oldest existing neighborhood celebrates is Sesquicentennial in 2019, and what better way to ring in the year than by brewing a special beer!
In commemoration of Springfield's milestone achievement as a community, the Springfield Preservation and Revitalization Council (SPAR) will host special events throughout the year. With two breweries already dotting the landscape along Main Street, and a third on the way very soon, it only seemed fitting that the occasion called for its own beer.

Photos: Because it Happened! Intuition Ale Works Underdark Day 2018
February 4, 2018: They came, they saw, they conquered.
On February 3, 2018, Intuition Ale Works unleashed its own version of the dark side, with the annual Underdark Release Day, held at the Jacksonville brewery. With bottles of the prized Imperial Stout aged in oak barrels at stake, hundreds of beer enthusiasts began lining up behind the brewery as early as 6:30am awaiting the 11am opening and chance to possess the Underdark and this year's variants: Chocolate Orange, Coffee, Sazerac. As the clock honed in on the magic hour and the front of the line began walking out with boxes of Underdark, those still in the parking lot gasped in awe. With the flavored versions available only in limited quantities, the beer geeks' anticipation grew throughout the morning. But, alas, they braved the winds as they conquered the time with their coolers and a few bottles of their own, undaunted, and entered the land of the Underdark. ....

No Sun? No Rain! No Problem: Florida Brewers Guild Warmed It Up at Barrel-Aged, Sour & Cider Fest, Jax

Holiday music on the radio while travelling north on I-95. Gray skies. A temperature reading of 48° at 1pm at Intuition Ale Works. Non-tropical breezes skirting over the river. Aromas from the coffee manufacturer a block away. Santa could have been lurking in these un-Florida-like holiday conditions. What's that about bourbon, whiskey, and staying warm? The Florida Brewers Guild hosted its third annual Barrel-Aged, Sour & Cider Fest in the backlot at Intuition Ale Works in Jacksonville on Saturday, December 9, under cloudy skies in a climate that could have evoked an image of a St. Bernard with a barrel.

Rollin' Out the Barrel: Florida Brewers Guild Barrel-Aged, Sour & Cider Fest Rolls Into Intuition Ale Works
December 4, 2017:
When the Florida Brewers Guild rolls out the third edition of its annual Barrel-Aged, Sour & Cider Fest on Saturday, December 9 at Intuition Ale Works in Jacksonville, attendees can expect "more breweries, more beers" this year, according to Sean Nordquist, FBG Executive Director. The unique fest is set to host over 35 Florida breweries bringing the smooth tastes of barrel-aged beers along with the funk of sours, the tartness of Berliner Weisses and Goses, and the fruitiness of ciders. For those who savor the words "bourbon," "rye," and "whiskey" when describing barrels, and get thrown into a frenzy at the mention of "Brettanomyces" and "Lactobacillus," the fest is certain to tempt tastebuds!

IRMA IPA Lands in Jax

IRMA IPA
(Photo: Linda Johnson) |
It's a name that no one in Florida will soon - if ever - forget. Irma. By the time the mammoth hurricane reached the southern part of the state in mid-September 2017, it had already inflicted severe damage to island nations. As it began and ended its this-way-and-that-way trek through the Sunshine State, all of Florida was affected in one way or another, sadly with some areas sustaining major damage and impacts never before seen. From the pre-storm warnings and computer forecasting models, evacuations, flooding and wind, caravans of out-of-state utility vehicles, water shortages, to repair and recovery, it was an experience made of historical proportions, and for some, the story still has not reached its final chapter.

On Saturday, September 2, the "fruits" of their efforts will be pouring from the taps at Bottlenose Brewing, 9700 Deer Lake Ct., in the Tinseltown area of Jacksonville's Southside district, beginning at 11am.

Intuition Ale Works Sixth Anniversary "Week" is Here
The week before Thanksgiving means lots of things. Around the Jax craft beer community, it means Intuition Ale Works hosts an Anniversary Party. And, not "just" a party -- an entire week of beer events leading up to an Anniversary Bash. This year marks Intuition's Sixth Anniversary, and the week-long celebration starts November 15. So, mark those calendars and join the party!
First of all, by now, you know that Intuition opened its new brewery and tap room on East Bay St. in Downtown Jacksonville adjacent to the Sports Complex in September, and closed its original Riverside location. (Just making sure. And, if you didn't know that, check out the preview story here.)

Grand Slam for Beer Events in Jacksonville
With three breweries holding major events, and one popular food and craft beer market hosting an Oktoberfest celebration, it was a Grand Slam for beer around Jacksonville, Florida this past weekend! October 22 had been looming large on the brew calendar, as there were at least four other beerfests around the Sunshine State on the same day.
While it may have seemed a daunting endeavor to attend four events in one day, this writer was up to the task, armed with a carefully-planned itinerary, camera, and refillable water bottle.
Intuition Ale Works: New Downtown Jax Brewery & Tap Room Pretty Easy on the Eyes
Whoa ....

The "new" Intuition Ale Works at 929 E. Bay St., Jacksonville |
OK, I admit that might not be the most professional way to start an article about one of the most anticipated brewery events in Jacksonville (if not the state). It's been in planning for a few years, and it's been under construction for the past few months. If you follow the local craft beer scene, you're aware of the "big" move. In late August, INTUITION ALE WORKS formally announced September 6 as the day it will open the doors of its new downtown Jacksonville brewery, tap room and rooftop beer garden at 929 E. Bay Street to the public.

Let's Have a Beer .... in Jacksonville, Fla! (repeat trip)
[NOTE: I thought it was time to write about the Jacksonville breweries, and, really, it's been long overdue. I am thrilled to have written this story especially for the Beer Bloggers Conference (BBC) 2016, and it was posted recently on the Beer Bloggers Conference website as a lead story. The Conference is held in a different beer-centric city each year. This time around, it heads to Tampa July 8-10, along with a featured pre-con visit to Jacksonville. I'm excited to be a part of the BBC this year and want to say "Thanks" to the BBC for this opportunity. This is the first in a series of the Jax area breweries, so stay tuned. And, by the way, a special "thank you" goes out to the Jax area breweries!] ....

Do You Know Your Boot from Your Maß ("mass")? It's Oktoberfest time!
There's probably no more festive time of year in the beer world than OKTOBERFEST! The original German Oktoberfest happens each year in Munich during the last two weeks of September through the first weekend of October, and is host to approximately 6 million fest-goers each year. If you aren't one of those attending the "Wiesn" (German for "meadow") this year, don't get your shorts all in a bunch. We also celebrate it here in the U.S. So, grab your lederhosen and dirndls because everyone's German during Oktoberfest!
Freedom for the 64 oz Growler!
When I moved here four years ago, I tried to get a refill on a half-gallon (64 oz.) growler that relocated here with me from Northwest Indiana, just outside of Chicago. I mean, what's the big deal; they're everywhere in the Midwest and elsewhere. No, I was told, can't do that. At first I thought it was because the growler was some kind of out-of-state alien, that needed proof of state residency. Well, we all know the story.....
