Photos: Because It Happened!: Legacy Ale Works, Jax, Hosts Women's Brew Day, March 8

UPDATE, 3/31: THE PINK BOOTS BEER THAT WAS BREWED HERE WILL BE ON TAP AT LEGACY ALE WORKS ON FRIDAY, APRIL 5. PROCEEDS GO TO PINK BOOTS SOCIETY. UPDATE PHOTO BELOW.

March 10, 2019: Craft Beer has taken the annual International Women's Day to a new level with "International Women's Collaboration Brew Day." Across the country on March 8, numerous craft breweries hosted a brew day or released a beer brewed by women. The beer, known as the "Pink Boots Beer," featured a mixture of hops, itself collaborated upon by the Pink Boots Society and hop provider Yakima Chief Hops. The "Pink Boots Blend" included Loral®, Mosaic®, Simcoe®, Sabro™  and Glacier hops. What the brewers decided to do with that blend was up to the brewers!

Locally, in Jacksonville, Florida, Legacy Ale Works co-owner Liz Jacobs reached out to area women craft beer lovers interested in attending the special brew day. Legacy Ale Works only opened about a month earlier, and Liz was already getting the word out about the Brew Day. She and co-owner husband/brewer Matt had previously brewed a pilot batch of their Pink Boots Beer, a Belgian IPA, and on the morning of March 8, an eager group of ladies assembled ready to begin brewing on the 3.5-barrel system.

The group included several female brewery owners from SJ Brewing (Yulee), Hyperion Brewing (Jacksonville), and brewery-in-planning Azalea City Brewing (Palatka). There was a job for everyone, from milling grain, mashing in, measuring hops, and removing spent grain. The day also featured a brunch catered by local beer-and-food pairing Chef Sarah Copeland of Craft Cuisine Jax.

The Pink Boots Beer from the Collaboration Brew Day will be ready to pour in early April. This website obtained a sample from the pilot batch previously, and found it to be mostly fruity in flavor, with subtle Belgian yeast notes.

Take a look at the PHOTO ALBUM from this website for more from the Collaboration Brew Day. Even Matt was on hand to make sure that things were going as planned in the brewhouse, and he seemed to enjoy watching the ladies at work. It was a day of camaraderie all in the name of beer! Thanks to Legacy Ale Works for being wonderful hosts! The general consensus was that it was an awesome day!

Separately, Main & Six Brewing (Jacksonville) had previously brewed a different version of the Pink Boots Beer, a New England Session IPA, which was released on Collaboration Brew Day. Several of the participants at Legacy Ale Works ended the brewing experience by visiting Main & Six in the spirit of the day and to sip a different version. This website had a chance to taste that one the next day. The Session IPA presented a vastly different profile, from the color and haziness to the accentuated fruitiness associated with the style. As Main & Six Brewer/Co-Owner Dennis Espinosa confirmed, there's something very cool about brewing and "seeing what can be done with the same ingredients."

Very cool, indeed.

Thanks again to Legacy Ale Works for opening the brewery for the collaboration brew day -- no small task after having been open for such a short time. When the beer is tapped, be sure to stop by!

Cheers!

Til next time,

Jacksonville Breweries Collaborate for Springfield Neighborhood Sesquicentennial in 2019

January 5, 2019: Jacksonville's oldest existing neighborhood celebrates is Sesquicentennial in 2019, and what better way to ring in the year than by brewing a special beer!

In commemoration of Springfield's milestone achievement as a community, the Springfield Preservation and Revitalization Council (SPAR) will host special events throughout the year. With two breweries already dotting the landscape along Main Street, and a third on the way very soon, it only seemed fitting that the occasion called for its own beer.

MAIN & SIX BREWING OPENS IN JACKSONVILLE, NOVEMBER 3-4, 2017

Main & Six Brewing opened its doors with a soft opening on Friday night, November 3. Those in attendance were able to taste six house beers on tap. The soft opening not only let guests get an early taste of the new beers, but it also gave the crew a chance to prepare for the next day's Grand Opening!

A steady stream of well-wishers and craft beer lovers visited Main & Six on Saturday afternoon, November 4, at the Grand Opening, which coincided with the Jacksonville PorchFest neighborhood music fest a few blocks away.

Take a look at the Main & Six preview story on brewnymph.com, and make a visit to Jacksonville's newest brewery!

JAX BEER WEEK 2017: NOVEMBER 4-11

Jax Beer Week kicks off November 4 at Jacksonville PorchFest. The Springfield music fest will also offer a beer garden, highlighting beer from local Jacksonville breweries. Over 20 different beers in a variety of styles will be available. Beer trucks will pour beer in Klutho Park, and the beer can be enjoyed while walking around the neighborhood listening to the music on front porches.

The main beer list at PorchFest includes local favorites from Bold City Brewery, Engine 15 Brewing, Green Room Brewing, Aardwolf Brewing, Veterans United Craft Brewery, Intuition Ale Works, Pinglehead Brewing, Zeta Brewing, Wicked Barley Brewing and Atlantic Beach Brewing. Several beers by popular Florida breweries Cigar City Brewing and Funky Buddha Brewery will also be served. Additional beverage options include ciders from Engine 15 and Cigar City, and a variety of wines. Beer will be available from noon-9pm. Beer will be sold by ticket per individual cup, at $5 each.

Collaboration Beer: Local Jacksonville area breweries, including Hyperion Brewing, Veterans United Craft Brewery, Atlantic Beach Brewing and Zeta Brewing, recently brewed a Jax Beer Week collaboration beer, the SouRed Society, at Intuition Ale Works. According to Intuition Head Brewer Andrew Cattell, the beer is a dry-hopped sour red ale, similar to last year's collaboration beer. The beer is expected to be available at PorchFest, and look for it around Jax.

In addition, Jacksonville brewery-in-planning Legacy Ale Works will offer complimentary samples (while supplies last) of two of its beers, a spiced red ale and a dunkelweizen, according to brewery co-owner Liz Jacobs. For a Q&A interview with Matt and Liz Jacobs before their first local tasting earlier this summer, click here

PorchFest Sponsors and donor Patrons will also enjoy a designated VIP seating area near the main stage. Between 5-6pm, the VIP tent will offer a complimentary VIP Happy Hour featuring hors d'oeuvres and beer tastings from local breweries-in-planning Legacy Ale Works and Strings Sports Brewery, along with Hyperion Brewing and Main & Six Brewing.

PorchFest hosted a pre-party at Sweet Pete's Candy in Downtown Jax on Thursday evening, November 2, which featured beer samplings by Legacy Ale Works, Strings Sports Brewery, and Hyperion Brewing.

Also happening on Saturday, November 4: new brewery Main & Six Brewing Company officially opens its doors to the public with a Grand Opening celebration, beginning at noon. Check out the new brewery before you even get there, with a behind-the-scenes pre-opening early look, along with an interview of co-owner Dennis Espinosa.  The brewery held a soft opening on Friday night, November 3, to get ready for the huge opening day ahead:

Irmafest: Oktoberfest beer named after, well, you know.
A malty marzen with a nutty character.

Finished tap room: see the before photos.
Tables are all refinished now.
Note the hexagon floor -- see the pre-story!

We need a beer!
Big Jim California Common:
named after the local steam whistle.
Malty and hoppy at the same time.

Look for tappings, takeovers, and tastings all over Jacksonville and Jax Beach throughout the week. A calendar of events can be found on the "Tap This" page right here on brewnymph.com.

On Sunday, November 5, join the crew from the up-and-coming Strings Sports Brewery at Hyperion Brewing, where both breweries will introduce their collaboration beer, a Sweet Potato Brown Ale. Also on Sunday, Alewife hosts its annual Jax Beer Week Bottle Share.

And, going retro for a minute: there were two new beer releases on Friday, November 3: Atlantic Beach Brewing's first bottle release of its new Cafecito de Cuba; and Southern Swells Brewing's first can releases: Truth Juice DIPA, and In a Galaxy Really Really Close By IPA - check those out on the new video "Let's Get a Beer, Florida!"

That's just for starters, and there are even more events going on all week. Your weekly calendar just filled up!

Happy Jax Beer Week!  See you around Jax this week!

Main & Six Brewing, Jax: Neighborhood-Inspired Brewery Brews Up November 4 Opening Date

November 1, 2017:
When Dennis Espinosa opens the doors to Main & Six Brewing Company on Saturday, November 4, it will already be an anniversary in the new brewery's life. It was a year ago to the day that he and brewery co-owner Cindy Lasky (who also happens to be his mom) closed on the purchase of the building at 1636 North Main Street in the Springfield neighborhood of Jacksonville, just north of the city's downtown.
[Ed. Note, 11/5: Check out some "after" photos and comments about the beer and the crowd from the Soft Opening on Friday night, 11/3, and the Grand Opening, 11/4 on the Photos page! Photos and info you saw here first!]
