Photos: Because It Happened!: Legacy Ale Works, Jax, Hosts Women's Brew Day, March 8

UPDATE, 3/31: THE PINK BOOTS BEER THAT WAS BREWED HERE WILL BE ON TAP AT LEGACY ALE WORKS ON FRIDAY, APRIL 5. PROCEEDS GO TO PINK BOOTS SOCIETY. UPDATE PHOTO BELOW.

March 10, 2019: Craft Beer has taken the annual International Women's Day to a new level with "International Women's Collaboration Brew Day." Across the country on March 8, numerous craft breweries hosted a brew day or released a beer brewed by women. The beer, known as the "Pink Boots Beer," featured a mixture of hops, itself collaborated upon by the Pink Boots Society and hop provider Yakima Chief Hops. The "Pink Boots Blend" included Loral®, Mosaic®, Simcoe®, Sabro™  and Glacier hops. What the brewers decided to do with that blend was up to the brewers!

Locally, in Jacksonville, Florida, Legacy Ale Works co-owner Liz Jacobs reached out to area women craft beer lovers interested in attending the special brew day. Legacy Ale Works only opened about a month earlier, and Liz was already getting the word out about the Brew Day. She and co-owner husband/brewer Matt had previously brewed a pilot batch of their Pink Boots Beer, a Belgian IPA, and on the morning of March 8, an eager group of ladies assembled ready to begin brewing on the 3.5-barrel system.

The group included several female brewery owners from SJ Brewing (Yulee), Hyperion Brewing (Jacksonville), and brewery-in-planning Azalea City Brewing (Palatka). There was a job for everyone, from milling grain, mashing in, measuring hops, and removing spent grain. The day also featured a brunch catered by local beer-and-food pairing Chef Sarah Copeland of Craft Cuisine Jax.

The Pink Boots Beer from the Collaboration Brew Day will be ready to pour in early April. This website obtained a sample from the pilot batch previously, and found it to be mostly fruity in flavor, with subtle Belgian yeast notes.

Take a look at the PHOTO ALBUM from this website for more from the Collaboration Brew Day. Even Matt was on hand to make sure that things were going as planned in the brewhouse, and he seemed to enjoy watching the ladies at work. It was a day of camaraderie all in the name of beer! Thanks to Legacy Ale Works for being wonderful hosts! The general consensus was that it was an awesome day!

Separately, Main & Six Brewing (Jacksonville) had previously brewed a different version of the Pink Boots Beer, a New England Session IPA, which was released on Collaboration Brew Day. Several of the participants at Legacy Ale Works ended the brewing experience by visiting Main & Six in the spirit of the day and to sip a different version. This website had a chance to taste that one the next day. The Session IPA presented a vastly different profile, from the color and haziness to the accentuated fruitiness associated with the style. As Main & Six Brewer/Co-Owner Dennis Espinosa confirmed, there's something very cool about brewing and "seeing what can be done with the same ingredients."

Very cool, indeed.

UPDATE PHOTO BELOW: With Liz on National Beer Day, 4/7, with the Pink Boots Beer, named #NailedIt .. Yeah, we did!

Thanks again to Legacy Ale Works for opening the brewery for the collaboration brew day -- no small task after having been open for such a short time. When the beer is tapped, be sure to stop by!

Cheers!

Til next time,

Photos: Because It Happened!: 2019 Donna 5k at THE PLAYERS, March 2

March 3, 2019:  It was a very pink morning at a very green venue for the 12th edition of the Donna 5k at The PLAYERS, on Saturday, March 2, at the famed TPC Sawgrass course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. With the move to March from May of The PLAYERS Championship in 2019, so too came a rescheduled date of the charity 5k hosted by The Donna Foundation in its ongoing initiative to provide awareness and assistance to those affected by breast cancer. Over the past years, the 5k course has changed somewhat, with different start and finish points near the TPC Sawgrass Clubhouse or behind the 17th Tee area. The course takes participants (run or walk) through the back nine of the spectacular course, past Holes 10 and 11, around several food court sites set up for the tournament, around the 16th Tee and along the fairway, past the renowned 17th Tee and Green, before heading to the cartpath next to the 9th fairway and green, and then making the turn home toward the magnificant clubhouse and the dual finish/start line. For those who watch the tournament on TV, broadcast doesn't capture all of the hills and elevation nuances, and the 5k course tracked those as well (in other words, there's quite a bit of hilly terrain here!).

Photos: Because It Happened! Daytona 5k: Daytona International Speedway, January 26, on Rolex 24 Weekend

January 27, 2019: Before the drivers started their engines at the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, January 26, 2019, a different announcer called for runners to start their engines at the Daytona 5k on the backstretch of the famed track. Around 1400 hearty types braved windy 48°weather ahead of a 7am start time for a chance to step foot on the track and experience those treacherous 30° banked turns on foot.  Clothing options ran the gamut: tank tops and shorts for either the serious runners, or those who just wanted to defy Mother Nature, or those who just didn't look at the forecast (I couldn't tell), to sweatpants and jackets, to yoga pants, headbands, gloves, and knit hats.

Just before the start of the run, in the pre-sunrise darkness, there were only a few minutes left to try to warm up those quads, hamstrings and calves (video).

Photos: Because It Happened! Pink Up The Pace 5k, St. Augustine

October 6, 2018: If it's the first Saturday in October, it must be time for Pink Up The Pace 5K through the streets of St. Augustine, Florida!

Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, Pink Up The Pace raises funds to assist those affected by breast cancer and to bring awareness to the community. The annual 5K coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The organization was founded by Cindy Ortiz Chaconas and Amy Kaelin, both breast cancer survivors. Over two thousand participants were expected for the 2018 Pink Up The Pace 5k, held on October 6, 2018.

No matter what your goal is -- to run fast, improve your 5k time, or just to finish the 3.1 miles -- one thing is certain: this is a fun and loving event for a great cause.

The morning began before sunrise, as volunteers set up tables at Francis Field, adjacent to the Visitors Information Center and parking garage in downtown St. Augustine. Music filled the air, as bottles of water and bagels filled tables and tubs. A warm-up Zumba class, led by Funkytown Fitness, got bodies moving and feet tapping:

February 4, 2018: They came, they saw, they conquered.

Intuition Ale Works Underdark 2018:
Bottle of Coffee, bottle of Underdark,
and Underdark 2018 in the cup
On February 3, 2018, Intuition Ale Works unleashed its own version of the dark side, with the annual Underdark Release Day, held at the Jacksonville brewery. With bottles of the prized Imperial Stout aged in oak barrels at stake, hundreds of beer enthusiasts began lining up behind the brewery as early as 6:30am awaiting the 11am opening and chance to possess the Underdark and this year's variants: Chocolate Orange, Coffee, Sazerac. As the clock honed in on the magic hour and the front of the line began walking out with boxes of Underdark, those still in the parking lot gasped in awe. With the flavored versions available only in limited quantities, the beer geeks' anticipation grew throughout the morning. But, alas, they braved the winds as they conquered the time with their coolers and a few bottles of their own, undaunted, and entered the land of the Underdark. ....

MAIN & SIX BREWING OPENS IN JACKSONVILLE, NOVEMBER 3-4, 2017

Main & Six Brewing opened its doors with a soft opening on Friday night, November 3. Those in attendance were able to taste six house beers on tap. The soft opening not only let guests get an early taste of the new beers, but it also gave the crew a chance to prepare for the next day's Grand Opening!

A steady stream of well-wishers and craft beer lovers visited Main & Six on Saturday afternoon, November 4, at the Grand Opening, which coincided with the Jacksonville PorchFest neighborhood music fest a few blocks away.

Take a look at the Main & Six preview story on brewnymph.com, and make a visit to Jacksonville's newest brewery!

The place: Brewer's Pizza/Pinglehead Brewing, Orange Park/Jax

Congratulations to Pinglehead Brewing and Brewer's Pizza, as they marked seven years of pizza and "Beer With Attitude" at the annual PHobia PHest celebration of beer, pizza and Halloween.

Yes, that infamous Pinglehead Clown was watching over the crowd all afternoon.

The brewery released four new barrel-aged beers in the new Crowlers: Rum Barrel-Aged Banana Pancakes Breakfast Ale, Port Barrel Barleywine, Bourbon Barrel Mind Drive Imperial Porter, and Double Oaked Bourbon Barrel Mind Drive Imperial Porter.

It was a devilishly, haunting good time at Brewer's Pizza! Cheers to another year!
